Polar Bear Challenge / Klondike Derby

January 28 - 29, 2012

Scouts will be participating in the annual ‘Klondike Derby’ at Nobscot Scout Reservation in Sudbury, MA. For those who have never attended this great event, you are encouraged to go, mainly for the outdoor experience you will undoubtedly gain, the friends you’ll meet from other scouting districts, and the pure fun you’ll have. Scouts will be staying in tents, and must bring the proper cold-weather gear, which will be discussed in the meetings to come.

There is a list of gear on pages 264 and 270 - 273 of the Boy Scout Handbook that each scout will read over and check to make sure they have before the event. Congratulations. If you are reading this sentence, it means that you have actually read vital information concerning this once-a-year trip.

Meet at the Bright School parking lot at 7:30AM Saturday. We’ll all leave Nobscot on Sunday by 12:00Noon and return to the Bright School by 1:00pm. Call Eric Bergeron at 781-608-8126 or John Reilly at 781-893-2940 with any questions.

Permission slips are due back by Wednesday, January 18th!!   Click Here to Download Permission Slip.

Holiday Trip to Camp Collier

December 9 - 11, 2011

The December Troop trip was our traditional annual holiday trip, highlighted by a "trash can turkey" dinner with all the fixins! Due to storm damage at our usual venue (Resolute) this year we held this year's event at Camp Collier in Gardner, MA. Mr. Logan made his famous dutch oven apple pies and a good time was had by all!

Welcome Back!

September 8, 2011

Dear Scouts and Parents,

I would like to welcome you all back to another Scouting year.  I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer. The Scouts and Adult Leaders have been busy planning for the upcoming year.  During the summer Scouts have planned the activities for the upcoming year and the troop website has been updated.  The web site allows us to make information available much more quickly so it should be the first place you look for current information!

Meeting Location – Troop 250 will be meeting at the former Bright Elementary School building on Wednesday nights.  The address of the former Bright Elementary School building is 260 Grove Street.  Enter from parking lot in rear off Clark Street. We start at 6:45PM and close the meetings at 8:30PM.

Registration Night - Our first meeting will be a registration night on September 14, 2011.  We ask that at least one parent or guardian from each family plan to attend this meeting.  There are a lot of activities coming up during the Scouting year and we would like to take this opportunity to go over these details.  Scouts will be planning for the September sailing/camping trip to T.L. Storer Scout Reservation in Barnstead, NH the weekend of September 23rd - 25th.

Dues – This year the annual dues will remain the same at $100 per Scout.  Each Parent can earn up to $30 of credit towards dues by completing 12 hours of service to the troop.  $15 will be credited after the first 6 hours of service and the remaining $15 after the remaining 6 hours.  Dues can be paid in two installments if you choose.  The first payment of $50 is due at registration, and the second payment of $50 is due January 5th.  Service to the troop can include helping with fundraisers, organizing trips or service projects, providing transportation to events and many other activities.  We need your help to make this program a success. If you are financially unable to pay for some or all of the dues or fees or need help in equipping your Scout for participation in the program, please contact, in confidence, Scoutmaster Eric Bergeron or Treasurer Paul Perry.

Fundraisers – The troop holds several fundraisers throughout the year that help to pay for the cost of the program.  While some of this money goes to the troop, much of the money goes directly into each Scout’s account and can be used to pay for camping activities, summer camp, Scout equipment, dues and a variety of other Scout related expenses. In the coming year there are several trips which will be more expensive than usual. Participating in fundraising will help Scouts pay for their trips.

Equipment – During the course of the year many Scouts check out troop and patrol equipment to use on camping trips.  We also have personal gear like tents and backpacks that new Scouts can borrow until they get their own. We recommend waiting to buy major camping items until the Scout has had a chance to try out the loaners and decide what particular piece of gear meets their needs.  During the course of the year many Scouts check out troop and patrol equipment to use on camping trips.  Unfortunately this gear does not always make it back to the troop.  We would ask that you each take a look around your house and see if you have any troop gear hiding out.  If you do, please return it so that it will be available to the Scouts when camping.

October Backpacking Trip on The Wapack Trail

October 21 - 23, 2011

Troop 250 spent a crisp Autumn weekend traversing the peaks along the Southern half of the Wapack Trail on the MA/NH border. On Friday night we camped at Camp Split Rock in Ashburnham, MA, then broke camp early on Saturday morning and drove to the trailhead near Mt Watatic. It was a cool, crisp day, but dry and not too cold - perfect hiking weather. We hiked the Wapack Trail up to the top of Mt. Watatic. It was a very clear day and from the top of Mt. Watatic we could see Boston. We then continued down the other side of the mountain and followed the trail across the state line, passed through the woods near Binney Pond, and then ascended Pratt Mountain, where we stopped for lunch. The Binney Pond Overlook on the side of Pratt Mountain provided a spectacular panoramic view of the hills and mountains all resplendent in their spectacular Fall colors, again with the Boston skyline clearly visible in the distance. After lunch we continued our journey over New Ipswich Mountain to Barret Mountain, where we stayed the night. Sunday morning we broke camp and headed down to the Windblown Ski Area and on to home. It was a great weekend adventure that we will all long remember!
