October Backpacking Trip on The Wapack TrailOctober 21 - 23, 2011Troop 250 spent a crisp Autumn weekend traversing the peaks along the Southern half of the Wapack Trail on the MA/NH border. On Friday night we camped at Camp Split Rock in Ashburnham, MA, then broke camp early on Saturday morning and drove to the trailhead near Mt Watatic. It was a cool, crisp day, but dry and not too cold - perfect hiking weather. We hiked the Wapack Trail up to the top of Mt. Watatic. It was a very clear day and from the top of Mt. Watatic we could see Boston. We then continued down the other side of the mountain and followed the trail across the state line, passed through the woods near Binney Pond, and then ascended Pratt Mountain, where we stopped for lunch. The Binney Pond Overlook on the side of Pratt Mountain provided a spectacular panoramic view of the hills and mountains all resplendent in their spectacular Fall colors, again with the Boston skyline clearly visible in the distance. After lunch we continued our journey over New Ipswich Mountain to Barret Mountain, where we stayed the night. Sunday morning we broke camp and headed down to the Windblown Ski Area and on to home. It was a great weekend adventure that we will all long remember!
